Strong Assistance | EU Releases Element Migration Standard for Toys EN 71-3:2019+A2:2024

On October 31, 2024, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) approved a revised version of the toy safety standard EN 71-3: EN 71-3:2019+A2: The official version of the standard "Toy Safety - Part 3: Migration of Specific Elements" was officially released on December 4, 2024.

The main technical changes are as follows:

1. The dewaxing step for products containing oils, fats, waxes, or similar materials has been removed, as it has been found to affect the reproducibility of test results.

2. Allow the use of migration results of total chromium (Cr) to infer whether the product meets the migration limits for trivalent chromium (Cr (III)) and hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)).

3. Allow the use of total tin (Sn) migration results to infer whether the product meets the migration limit for organic tin.

4. Emphasize that mixed testing is a modification of testing methods.

5. Use CEN/TS 17973:2023 as the classification method for slimes.
